A Bit About Gareth & James

We both work for British Airways and met through work. Gareth is usually based in Newcastle but was temporarily working at the head office in London for one week each month. James is cabin crew for British Airways, so he’s in London almost every week. It was during one of the weeks Gareth was in London that he met James. It was a chance meeting, but after a few coffee dates and relocation for James, we’re both settled and are happy to call Newcastle our home.

Occupation?

Gareth - I've worked for British Airways for 10 years and I’m a Social Media Specialist. I help to manage customer queries via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. James- I've worked for British Airways for about 4 years and I'm a cabin crew based at London Heathrow. You’ll usually find me on the west coast of the USA in Los Angeles.

Do you have any pets and their names?

Lilly is our Jackawawa and she's 6 years old. It was one of our conditions that we wanted her at the wedding as we’re completely besotted with her. She’s not always well-behaved but we just love her personality.

Where are you originally from?

Gareth - I'm born and bred in the North East and Newcastle has always been my home. James- I'm originally from a small city called Chester in the North West, but Newcastle has now become home.

When, how, who and where did the question get popped?

We always consider ourselves to be a non-traditional couple and so we didn’t have an engagement. When you're in a same-sex relationship, there are no rules or traditions to follow and we didn't want the engagement to fall on one of us. A friend from school once told me that being in a same-sex relationship means you only need to keep the traditions that are important to you. During the COVID lockdown, we discussed our future plans and what that might look like. We felt ready to commit to each other, so we looked at some wedding venues for costs and ideas and soon set a date. We hadn’t told anyone about our intentions, so we simply shared our news once we were ready to. There was no proposal, but we did go to Bamburgh (with Lilly) and had champagne at sunrise. We still kept up the tradition of seeking blessings from each family and me and James did this separately. It's a good job they said yes as the wedding was already booked.

Why did you choose the Venue over all over?

The cost was definitely a factor in our decision but we loved Hexham House and Hexham Abbey because of the flexibility they offered. When we viewed Hexham Abbey for the first time, we felt so relaxed and instantly knew it was the venue for us. They have allowed us to create our own bespoke wedding on the most stunning grounds. We love to go for walks in Northumberland and Hexham was a place we go to often. It's a lovely quiet town and is the perfect location for our wedding.

Why did you choose me as your photographer?

Choosing a wedding photographer can be difficult because there are so many options, but this was a really easy decision for us. Traditionally, weddings are very much focused on the bride, but being a same-sex couple, we knew our wedding day would look and feel very different. We wanted to choose someone who had confidence and was able to photograph a same-sex wedding naturally. We found Nick’s website by chance and saw that he had experience with photographing same-sex weddings, but he also had experience photographing dogs, which was perfect as we wanted Lilly to be included. We loved the quality of the photos and the attention Nick offered to each couple he worked with. We felt an instant connection and knew he was the photographer for us.

Do you have a wedding theme/colours?

We haven’t chosen a theme for the wedding, but the colours we’ve chosen are navy and blush pink. You’ll find us wearing navy most days and our wedding day will be no different.

Could you give 1 or more pieces of advice/tips for others that are planning their wedding?

Gareth - Don't be afraid to stray from tradition and only keep the traditions that matter to you. Enjoy the planning process, celebrate the countdown with family and friends, but make sure the day itself is about you. James - Just agree because sometimes it's not worth the battle.

Dance Floor

The dance floor is an important but fun part of any wedding reception. It's where the newlyweds and their guests can let loose, have fun, and create unforgettable memories together. A well-placed and well-lit dance floor can also add to the overall ambience of the wedding and I love to capture you all having the best time!

Overall, a dance floor at a wedding is a must-have for any couple looking to create a fun and memorable reception. By choosing the right location, lighting, size, and shape, a dance floor can add to the overall ambience and atmosphere of the celebration, creating a night to remember for all guests.

So you go and do your thing and I will photograph you all having a kick-ass time!
